Fall is the perfect time to explore Fredericksburg. Between the city itself and surrounding areas, there are lots of farms. Discover some of the best local options. Then, make a day of visiting them.

Braehead Farm

Braehead Farm is the only farm in historic Fredericksburg. Start by exploring the produce area, and then visit the farm market and beef cow section. If you prefer, pick your own local produce.

Of course, your kids will love the farm animals and play areas. There is a tree deck, sand piles, swings, corn pit, and trikes. Finally, plan on lunch at a picnic table, whether you bring your own or get something from the Braehead Farm Kitchen.

The farm’s hours change based on daylight savings time, but the farm always opens at 9 a.m. It closes at 5 p.m. during winter. The rest of the year, it closes at 6 p.m.

Miller Farms Market

Enjoy seasonal produce year-round at Miller Farms Market, which is in nearby Locust Grove. Depending on the time of the year, you can pick pumpkins or strawberries. You can also take advantage of the CSA.

Buy grass-fed beef or buy local milk from South Mountain Creamery. Then, add some pork from Papa Weavers or coffee from Orange Roasters Coffee. You can also enjoy the farm’s local sauces, jams, and jellies. The market has more than just items from Miller Farms. It sells other local produce, creating an amazing variety of items.

Visit the farm on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. On Saturdays, you can head over at 8 a.m.

Snead’s Asparagus Farm

Don’t be fooled by the name. Snead’s Asparagus Farm has more than asparagus. Schedule CSA boxes or visit the farm for pumpkins, melons, tomatoes, and more.

First, visit the small museum on-site. Then, go through the tomato tall tunnels and admire Ellen’s Perennial Garden. Stroll through the Whispering Pines Forest before letting your kids visit the log cabin playhouse or sand pile. Still have energy? There is also a picnic area, helicopter, mountain slides, and more.

Visit the farm from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. any day of the week. You can even bring your dog, as long as you don’t forget his leash.
