It’s a great time to get back to nature and enjoy the scenic views all around our area. We are fortunate to be located close to Shenandoah National Park in Luray, Virginia which is full of colorful flowers, rushing rivers, and exciting wildlife. Make plans to visit and explore this enchanting resource this season.
Hiking
Shenandoah National Park has over 500 miles of hiking trails to explore. There are hikes under a mile and all the way up to 9.8-miles. There are even hikes to waterfalls that you can enjoy. With so many options available, you are sure to find one that fits your skill level. Before you head out, keep these things in mind so you can be prepared for your hike.
- Make sure to pack plenty of water that is easily accessible, and don’t forget to bring extra for pets
- Bring the appropriate footwear for hiking on unpaved trails
- Look up the trail map ahead of time to make sure you have a good idea of where you are going and bring a compass or GPS unit to keep you on track
- You may get to see wildlife while you are out hiking. The park is home to deer, birds, bears, and snakes
Camping
Shenandoah National Park has plenty of camping options if you wish to spend more time in nature. They also have backcountry camping which is a primitive option that allows you to truly get away and enjoy the basics.
Fishing
There are over 90 streams located in the park area that are vital to the ecosystem. These streams support fish like Brook Trout, Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout. Enjoy catch and release fishing while you visit the area. Take a closer look at the fishing regulations so that you can enjoy responsibly.
Learning
The park has plenty of opportunities to learn more about the ecosystem as well as history in the area. You can visit the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, Massanutten Lodge, Bryd Visitor Center, Rapidan Camp and more. They offer scheduled tours, ranger programs, interactive experiences, and virtual tours if you can’t make it out in person.

In addition to the activities listed above, you can horseback ride, go rock climbing, bike ride, and more when you visit Shenandoah National Park.
While the park is always open, the main road through the park can close due to inclement weather. The facilities in the park are typically available from March to November. To learn more, check out their operating dates and hours here.
